Monty
Another loss for our pack today, as Monty passed away at the ripe old age of 14 1/2. He was the longest lived dog that we've had, and he had a great life, in and out of the woods. He finally hung up the bell and beeper collar a few years ago and had enjoyed his retirement from the grouse woods since then.

VT Grouse Hunting Update: 11/3/2018
The approaching muzzleloader season for deer in New Hampshire has meant a shift to our grouse covers in northern Vermont, and the hunting has been pretty good the last two days, although they were rain shortened sessions each day. The good news is that the areas that we were hunting were huge, which allowed us to put in some long half days of hunting - four hours or more in each spot.

NH Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Update: 10/24/2018
We are definitely now in the "second phase" of the grouse hunting season. Gone are the leaves that hid the grouse and woodcock so completely just two weeks ago and now the cover has opened up to a great extent. We're getting some good looks and semi-clean shots at fast escaping grouse and woodcock, but they are the survivors of the first few weeks, and tend not to linger too long when approached too closely by hunters or dogs.

Cold & Blustery
Cold and blustery. Two words that you rather were not used in the same sentence, let alone together, especially when it comes to describing conditions for grouse hunting. While cold really isn't a problem for hunters or dogs, blustery can make things much more challenging when we're pursuing the King of Gamebirds.

NH Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Update: 10/29/2017
Sometimes, it all comes together. Good conditions for us and the dogs, clients with unending (well, nearly unending) energy and solid shooting ability, and more than a few grouse and woodcock that hold and occasionally fly the wrong way for them. That's how the last two days went with long time clients of mine, Art and Craig, as we moved 49 birds (22 grouse, 27 woodcock) over this weekend.

Tall Timber's Monty and Bode on grouse point
March Scouting
Usually, our spring scouting in the north country takes place in April - by then, the snows of winter have mostly melted, enough for the dogs and I to get around the grouse woods without too much trouble. Well, spring came early this year (it seemed as though winter never really came), making for an extra couple of weeks of work for the dogs and escaping the winter doldrums for me.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 11/1/2014
A tale of two different days these last two days of the grouse hunting season. Yesterday was a tremendous fall day - upper 40s, sunny and little wind, and the birds were cooperating. We moved 37 birds yesterday - 18 grouse and 19 woodcock in New Hampshire's uplands, with many moments of great dog work.

Monty is the newest Tall Timber pup
The New Pup In Town
As the new “lodge dog”, Monty’s gotten plenty of attention from our guests, which has been great for him in his development. Right now, training centers around getting the lay of the land, obedience, and fitting in with Greta and Rudy.
