2019 Grouse hunting Highlights
It's feeling more and more like autumn in northern New Hampshire lately - 56 degrees today as I write this, and a much needed change in the weather and, thankfully, no more humidity. While summers tend to be short and sweet up here, fall can be even shorter at times, and becomes a more treasured part of our memory banks on those especially beautiful days.

Hello Again ...
We're less than three months away from the start of the New Hampshire grouse and woodcock seasons, and while it seems a ways off, it really isn't. It will be here before we all know it, so now is the time to get yourself and the dogs ready for the rigors that lie ahead.

Another Passing
However much we think that we're prepared for the moment of parting with a hunting partner and pet, we're usually not. We've seen this coming for quite a while with Rudy. After all, he was nearly 14 (two months shy) and had been having health problems for the last four years or so, with the last two years the toughest as his condition worsened, so it came as no surprise that this day was nearing.

Grouse On The Brain
Strange days are upon us, friends. The outbreak of the coronavirus has been a challenge physically, financially and also emotionally for many people around the world. There are constants in this sea of change, however. Hunting dogs, wild birds and the grouse woods all remain what they always were - a reminder of great days, partnership, wildness and most importantly, a refuge from the current state of craziness.

Final Session
The 2019 New Hampshire and Vermont grouse hunting seasons are nearly over now. Only one day left to pursue partridge, in the hopes of having one or two of them over as dinner guests. My pack and I have been out a few times in the past week, with mostly nothing to show for our efforts.

Peaceful, Easy Feeling
While the Eagles aren't my favorite band (though Joe Walsh and Don Felder were great guitarists), their song title pretty well sums up how it was out there in the grouse woods of northern New Hampshire today. It was very peaceful as a matter of fact - not a sound to be heard, about 25 degrees with very little wind, and a perfect day to be out following bird dogs once again.

Tracks
Ahhh ... winter grouse hunting. While it's not the easiest of the seasons of grouse hunting here in northern New Hampshire, it can be rewarding at times. The birds, when you find them, are often in groups as they are are usually sharing a food source or heavy cover to get out of the winter weather. There's also not many, if any, other hunters out there. Those are two of the positive aspects of grouse hunting in the winter. Unfortunately, there's a few drawbacks to this part of the season as well.

By the Numbers
Now there's some time to sit down and analyze the recently passed grouse guiding season. Frequent readers of the blog know that I keep a "tote board" of each grouse season (except the first season that I guided, in 2008), but this year I want to put some context with the numbers that we have collected over the last five weeks.
