German shorthaired pointer woodcock hunting in NH
September 5 Scouting
The weather has taken a turn towards fall lately in the north country, so running conditions for the dogs, particularly in the morning, have been all that we could ask for. It was really beautiful out there this morning, and with a slight breeze and plenty of moisture in the air, probably the remnants of a couple of rainy days that we've had this week, we had good scenting conditions for the canines.

Same Old, Same Old
Bode (above) and Rosie finally started their woods training today in Vermont, in search of grouse and woodcock to sharpen their skills on. Both dogs had good sessions in our limited time out there this morning (only 1.5 hours, due to rising temperatures), as they contacted eight birds (one grouse and seven woodcock) in their runs.

The Woods Are Alive, With The Sound of ...
Imagine Julie Andrews singing those lines to the old Sound Of Music tune ... Yes, I have a strange sense of humor, but spring has me absolutely giddy lately, as the change of seasons has finally taken hold in northern Vermont and New Hampshire.

It's Spring! Somewhere ...
Yes, somewhere (generally anywhere south of Franconia, NH) it is actually spring. Birds are chirping, geese are returning, and the usual assortment of dead roadside critters (raccoons and skunks mostly) are in abundance at the moment.

Grouse Hunting in the Winter
The grouse hunting season in northern New England, speaking specifically of New Hampshire and Vermont, is a short one. Yes, the rule book for both states may say that it stays open until December 31, but in most years the season lasts until the beginning of the firearm deer hunting seasons for all intents and purposes.

NH Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Update: 10/29/2018
The beat goes on up here in northern New Hampshire's grouse woods. The hunting has had its moments over the last few days, but this has been the most challenging period of the season so far, mostly due to our wintry weather conditions. It was unseasonably cold last week, with high temps in the 30's most days, and very brisk winds to boot. While the conditions didn't seem to bother the dogs too much, it made it difficult on us hunters.

NH Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Update: 10/24/2018
We are definitely now in the "second phase" of the grouse hunting season. Gone are the leaves that hid the grouse and woodcock so completely just two weeks ago and now the cover has opened up to a great extent. We're getting some good looks and semi-clean shots at fast escaping grouse and woodcock, but they are the survivors of the first few weeks, and tend not to linger too long when approached too closely by hunters or dogs.

NH Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Update: 10/15/2018
Nearly perfect weather over the last four days for comfortable grouse and woodcock hunting, for hunters and dogs alike. With temps starting out in the upper 20's and 30's, and topping out in the 40's and 50's, we couldn't ask for better conditions to chase birds over hill and dale. That still hasn't made them easy however, as the changing weather has resulted in the drop of some of the leaf cover that was out there, and this usually makes the grouse a little uneasy.
