So we're a full week in to the New Hampshire grouse and woodcock hunting season and those of you that follow our statistical tote board of flushes, contacts and kills have probably noticed that we while we have been harassing a good number of birds throughout this first week, we have very little to show for our efforts in the "grouse and woodcock taken" category.

The grouse hunting season opener in New Hampshire is merely seven days away now, while Vermont is only five days away. Needless to say, the dogs are excited to get out there for the real thing - enough of the "dress rehearsal" stuff that they've had to endure for the last couple of months.

Our New Hampshire training sessions have continued the last two mornings, and while yesterday was in the mid-40's when we started, this morning was in the low-50's when we left the truck. Nice temps at this time of year to get the dogs out, but the temperature rises quickly these days, so we were out of the woods by 10:30 or so both days.

That title is a bit misleading. After all, we've been doing our yard work for the last two months, reinforcing the "whoa" and "come" commands regularly. This morning was the start of training in the grouse woods, in an attempt to simulate what the dogs will be facing in less than three months (can't believe another hunting season is almost at hand).

A couple more grouse hunting excursions last week for the pups and myself, with good results for Rosie on Thursday, and for both Rosie and Monty last Friday. Unfortunately, I neglected to hold up my end of the bargain either day, and there was at least one grouse on Thursday that should have been coming home with us. No excuses, just a flat out miss after a staunch point from Rosie. The grouse held surprisingly well for Rosie, but it perhaps had settled in to some sense of security after probably not being bothered too much through the deer hunting season.

What About the Woodcock?

This has certainly been one of the strangest upland bird hunting seasons that I can remember, and the prime culprit for this has been our unpredictable weather. Don't get me wrong, autumn weather in northern New England is a chancy proposition at best, but this year it seems that it has been unusually abnormal. This weather has had some consequences for us, so we've had to try to adapt to what mother nature has thrown us.

Grouse have been known to eat many different things, depending on their location. If they're near old apple orchards, you can expect apples to be a major food source at this time of year, and we all know that high bush cranberries, hawthorn berries and mountain ash berries are also highly sought after by feeding grouse.

Sometimes, it all comes together. Good conditions for us and the dogs, clients with unending (well, nearly unending) energy and solid shooting ability, and more than a few grouse and woodcock that hold and occasionally fly the wrong way for them. That's how the last two days went with long time clients of mine, Art and Craig, as we moved 49 birds (22 grouse, 27 woodcock) over this weekend.
