NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/15
A tale of different days, with much different conditions for hunting grouse and woodcock in the uplands of New Hampshire. Yesterday was the day after a very busy holiday weekend, and though it started out on the chilly side, it had warmed considerably by noon and got down right hot in the afternoon. There's no doubt that the daily routine of many grouse and woodcock were disrupted (or ended entirely) last weekend, so that could also explain why Monday was a bit slower than we anticipated.

Rosie had some nice points and worked very thoroughly in the morning, providing a couple of chances on grouse and woodcock for my clients, but none fell to their guns. The afternoon saw much higher temperatures
(65 degrees, but it felt warmer than that), and after moving a couple of grouse, we sought lower lying areas with spruce cover, where grouse might be trying to stay cool. This worked out pretty well, as we flushed several more grouse with Rosie's help, but they offered no good shots. The total for the day was 14 grouse and 1 woodcock moved.

It rained a bit last night, and the moisture, combined with temps in the 30's this morning, gave us great conditions for upland bird hunting. Monty had himself a good morning, pointing several grouse at close range, as well as a bunch of woodcock. One of the grouse paid the ultimate price in the morning, but a couple others were missed and flew to safety. Overall, we moved around 21 birds this morning (14 grouse, 7 woodcock), and the visibility on these birds seemed to have been better from just a couple of days ago.

Rosie worked again this afternoon, and had more great work on grouse and a couple of woodcock as well. Another grouse was taken this afternoon over one of Rosie's staunch points, but a couple of other birds got away after feeling the heat of my client's gun. She once again worked with great energy and thoroughness, and seems to be developing in to a dependable bird dog. We moved a total of 21 grouse and 9 woodcock for the day, so it was a good one.

Rain is coming in force on Wednesday night in to Thursday and possibly Friday, with gusty winds on Thursday and Friday. We should lose a lot of our leaf cover and the shooting opportunities should get better for everyone.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/15
A pretty good week of bird hunting this week, especially after the temps became more “seasonal”. It was still a bit on the “too warm for grouse hunting side”, but when you see those sad, plaintive eyes of man’s best friend and realize just how short the season is, you end up grabbing your gun and strapping on your boots anyway.

Earlier this week, I was fortunate to hunt with Mike Scarks and Lou Wood, and also, and most importantly, with Lou’s three year old setter Tessa. Tessa did a great job overall on both grouse and woodcock in our hunts together, as we moved somewhere around 12 - 15 birds in our first morning together. She has a great tempo in moving through the grouse woods, and definitely knows what she is doing, and should have many great seasons of grouse hunting ahead of her.

While Lou bagged three grouse and two woodcock and Mike took one woodcock in our time together, Tessa gave them plenty of good chances at other birds. There was plenty of lead in the air in our first day together - so much that Lou ran low on 16 gauge ammo, and had to switch over to his 12 gauge for the afternoon hunt. Mike let it fly quite a few times as well, so I can’t let him off the hook either ... Sorry Mike!

Even cooler weather is on the way for us over the week coming up, but the rain is supposed to continue. There seems to be lots of woodcock around right now, so we’ll see how this weather pattern affects them.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/15
It’s pretty blustery outside tonight as I write this. Our nor’easter blew in last night and intensified this morning, leading to a big rainout of a day for our bird hunters. We did have some great autumn days this week however, and I was fortunate to spend a couple of those days hunting with Mike Scarks and Lou Wood, both veteran bird hunters, but new to the woods of Pittsburg. Lou brought along his two year old setter Tessa, and we also hunted with Greta and Rudy, with Monty mopping up on our last afternoon.

We had some good work from the dogs, and Tessa got plenty of work in over the two days. Tessa in particular excelled on many woodcock, and Rudy and Greta had some good work on the grouse. Monty tried hard but was unable to find any birds in his time in the woods. Mike and Lou were both good shots, as they harvested a total of six grouse and five woodcock over our two days together - pretty good, considering that we moved close to forty birds in two days.

The weather is supposed to slowly get better this week, with temps staying on the cold side - perfect weather for more flights of woodcock!
