Grouse hunting in New Hampshire
First Impressions
Three days in the books, and everything is going as it should in the grouse woods. The dogs were a little ragged to start, but both Bode and Rosie have been pointing the majority of their birds the last few days, and Monty performed well in his limited time out there on Tuesday.

A Curveball
That's Millie, with her first grouse of the season, taken in Vermont earlier this week. She patterned well, listened to my commands, hunted with plenty of energy, and maybe this is the tip of the iceberg for her. Unfortunately we were thrown a "curveball" this week, and will have to temporarily suspend our guiding operations until there's a resolution.

Crunch Time
We're getting down to the nitty gritty just before the ruffed grouse and woodcock hunting seasons start in New Hampshire and Vermont. If you're a dog owner, you might be sharpening up your pup's bird handling skills and conditioning, as well as honing your own dog handling skills and conditioning. We strive for progress in compliance with our commands, to hopefully have a productive and pleasurable hunting season ahead.

Progress
We are now just three weeks away from the Vermont grouse hunting season opener, and a full four weeks away from the opener in New Hampshire. Lots of scouting and training going on for myself and the dogs, as this week marked the first consistently cool morning temperatures we've had in quite a while.

Sisters
We are now under two months from the start dates of the grouse and woodcock hunting seasons in both New Hampshire and Vermont. Time is marching on, and we have been going out to the woods, preparing for what is to come next, that is "when the weather allows".

Yard Work
It's the time of the year where all good bird hunters should be working on the oft neglected commands that they likely will use during the hunting season. No rest for the weary, in other words, and it is hard to believe that the grouse and woodcock seasons open a mere four months from now. Sharpening up your dog's understanding of, and making possible corrections to, the commands that are very important for us bird hunters can be done now, instead of during that much anticipated hunt this autumn ...

Hope Springs Eternal
The northern New Hampshire winter snows have been rapidly melting over the last few weeks, allowing my pack and I to get out in the woods to work on wild birds again. In other words, the gravy train is over, and they have to get back to work ...

Another Season in the Books
It looks like our ruffed grouse hunting season has come to an end, as the weather has finally turned very wintry (7" of new snow and chilly temps this morning) this weekend. Last week turned out to be the swan song of our season, and a couple of beautiful days afield scratched the itch to pursue grouse before we're anxiously waiting for next fall again.
