Ruffed grouse hunting in New Hampshire
Blustery
That's Rocky from earlier this morning with a solid point on a grouse that held surprisingly well for him in the blustery conditions. A front came through last night, bringing a good amount of rain and strong winds out of the northwest all day today. It was the coldest day we've had so far, and it's hard to believe that just two weeks ago we were hunting in seventy degree weather.

Trending Upward
A better day yesterday in New Hampshire's uplands, as Bella (pictured) and Rocky both made strides in their development. Bella probably had her best day so far of the season, pointing three grouse and three woodcock in a short afternoon run, and Rocky chipped in by pointing three woodcock in the morning.

Ups and Downs
We've had spectacular conditions for grouse and woodcock hunting the last couple of days. Cool temps, with a bit of a breeze, have helped the dogs locate and hold point on quite a few of the birds that we've encountered lately. However, the quandary has been how one day of hunting can be so good and the next can be much tougher than we expected.

NH Upland Bird Hunting Update: 10/6
That's one and a half year old Bella, with a fine point on a woodcock from yesterday morning in New Hampshire. She's making strides in the grouse woods over the first week of our season, handling very well for me and pointing a number of grouse and woodcock for my clients. It should just get better too, as the weather conditions improve for scenting game birds.

Vermont Opener
The first few days of the Vermont grouse and woodcock season is in the books, and it's been a good start for my pack and I. The dogs have all worked with plenty of controlled energy, and more importantly, each canine has been rewarded for its efforts, as Daniel and Joseph had some success for their first time each out in the grouse woods.

Two Weeks Away ...
So, we are now technically less than two weeks away from the grouse and woodcock hunting season opener in Vermont, and fifteen days from now will be the opener in New Hampshire. My pack is in crunch time for preparation for handling the cover and the birds, so we're getting out there as much as the hot temperatures allow.

Bode pointing a woodcock
Season Prediction
That's Bode yesterday morning, deep in some thick cover, on point. Thankfully, it was a woodcock that he was on, one that let me walk right past it, the way woodcock sometimes do. When I released him from his point, he sprinted right to where the bird would take off from, and hopefully that bird will be around for us to chase in a month or so.

Expectations
The ruffed grouse and woodcock seasons in Vermont and New Hampshire are rapidly approaching, and we're in the homestretch of our preparation now. The dogs have all been getting some valuable "woods time" lately, scouting areas new and old, and more importantly getting in to shape for the rigors ahead.
