It looks like our ruffed grouse hunting season has come to an end, as the weather has finally turned very wintry (7" of new snow and chilly temps this morning) this weekend. Last week turned out to be the swan song of our season, and a couple of beautiful days afield scratched the itch to pursue grouse before we're anxiously waiting for next fall again.

It's that time of the grouse season again. Finally, a break for me and my spotted gang after a busy guiding schedule, meaning a much needed rest for the dogs, as well as a time for reflection on how this grouse season has gone. In short, it's been a good fall for finding grouse and woodcock, and my clients have connected on more birds (56 as of 11/20) this season than in any autumn we've had so far.

To say that we have been blessed with exceptional weather this November is an understatement. At a point in the season when it should be snowing, blowing and cold, it has been sunny with temperatures topping out in the 40's and 50's most days that we have been in the woods. Excellent weather for chasing ruffed grouse and watching bird dogs do what they do best!

Frankly speaking, we have been spoiled this grouse hunting season. Not only have we witnessed solid work by the dogs in their quest to find birds, but there have been good numbers of grouse as well, and the weather? For the most part, it has been amazing this fall, and we've been very fortunate to enjoy some beautiful and sunny days in the woods, especially this November.

It has been a most enjoyable grouse hunting season this year, and we concluded our days hunting the gray ghost in New Hampshire with longtime friend and client Matt. We've chased birds together and fished for trout, stripers and false albacore quite a few years now, and it is thoroughly entertaining every time we get together. He has very specific opinions on bird dogs, cover, birds, and just about any other topic that I dare to bring up, so I was prepared for a couple of amusing hunts with Matt.

Every day is different in grouse hunting, and that's one of the reasons why I enjoy it so much. Changing conditions, changing weather, the work of the dogs, and the birds themselves form the mosaic of what a day out in the grouse woods will be. Some days we can do no wrong, and finding where the birds are almost seems easy, and other days it is truly like finding a needle in a haystack.

Much like his opening of A Tale Of Two Cities, we just had two days of grouse and woodcock hunting that exemplify that oft quoted line. The weather couldn't have been any more different from Tuesday to Wednesday, and the hunting was the best of the season so far. Nevertheless, each day had its challenges for my clients and I.
