Passing Thoughts
Do we, as hunters, feel the passing of our bird dogs more acutely than other pet owners when their pets pass on? I'm not sure about that and it is rather presumptuous to think so. Greta was there during many changes and adventures in my life, along with becoming inextricably linked with our business (she really was a recognized face of Tall Timber).

One More Time
I am fortunate to live in an area that I know very well, so I can pick and choose where to take Greta, and because we have limited time out there, the choice covert always involves birds that are close at hand, not far from the truck. We were lucky today, as we contacted a group of four grouse literally one hundred feet from the truck.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/18
It’s pretty easy to hunt (and guide for) grouse and woodcock in years of plenty - this has definitely been one of those years, and we’ve had some great days lately. We moved our most birds ever for three days (91 - 66 of which were grouse) this week when I was out with Paul. While our first day together was our best with 35 bird contacts, Day Two was a respectable 29 contacts (25 grouse, 4 woodcock), and yesterday yielded another 27 contacts (19 grouse, 8 woodcock).

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/11
Today was also very windy, so that was something new for us this season and usually means skittish grouse. That was partially true, as about half of the grouse that we encountered often were off like a flash when they saw us or heard the tinkle of Monty’s bell.

Old Dogs & Old Tricks
Even though Greta’s getting up there in age (9 1/2 years) and doesn’t move around the way she once used to, she still has a pretty good nose for grouse.

NH Grouse Hunting Update
It seems like a pretty good start so far to this year’s hunt. Grouse numbers appear to be the same, and maybe even a bit better than last year. It also looks like our resident woodcock fared very well this spring and summer, but the early flights have begun up here as well, so things are really cooking.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/3
The start to the NH grouse season saw the remnants of a formidable tropical storm that belted us for two straight days, with October 1 falling on the second day of the torrent. Nevertheless, we are grouse hunters, and there were grouse to be pursued regardless of the weather conditions, so the answer to the question was simple: yes, we’re going out!

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/31
Late October is great for hunting grouse. Not only are the temperatures nice and cool, great for exerting yourself nearly to cardiac arrest in the woods, but there are no leaves blocking us from actually seeing the objects of our desires. The good hunting continued with Harry, Matt and Pete, a father and two sons that have lots of upland hunting experience.
