Winter ruffed grouse hunting
They're Back ...
That's Bella, now nearly a year old, on one of our snowshoeing excursions this winter. While this was, without a doubt, the mildest winter we've ever had in northern New Hampshire and Vermont, there were still plenty of days when we were able to get out and explore the winter woods. It kept the dogs in shape, and was beneficial for me to keep the winter blues at bay.

Winter
On the hibernal solstice, my pack and I decided to go out for some late season "winter" grouse hunting today. Actually, we have been out in the woods each of the last three days, after the drenching rain and warm weather we had back on Monday. First Seasons
Perhaps the most important hunting season in a puppy's development is the first fall, where they learn to love the woods and form a partnership with their owner/hunter that will last the remainder of its life. NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/25
A very eventful last few days in the northern New Hampshire grouse and woodcock woods lately. Thankfully, the woodcock are still around and are providing good action for us as we move towards the end of the month.

Progress
Sometimes with puppies, "progress" can happen at a glacial pace, and the making of a bird dog, especially one that is proficient at handling grouse and woodcock, can be especially slow. That is how it has seemed with Bella and Rocky, now both nearly seven months old.

Expectations
The ruffed grouse and woodcock seasons in Vermont and New Hampshire are rapidly approaching, and we're in the homestretch of our preparation now. The dogs have all been getting some valuable "woods time" lately, scouting areas new and old, and more importantly getting in to shape for the rigors ahead.
