Odds and Ends
Guiding operations shifted over to Vermont today, and we'll spend another day in the Green Mountain State tomorrow. My clients today were Randy and Conrad, and we had the pleasure of hunting behind Randy's pointers Ginger and Axel. It didn't take long for Ginger to get things going on the right foot as she pointed three woodcock in a short amount of time and Conrad helped her remember exactly why she's out there by taking two of them on skillful shooting.

NH Grouse Hunting Report: 10/6
A slightly abbreviated session today with Brian Fradette and his hard working Brittany Spaniels. They are young at three years old, but these siblings cover the grouse woods well and point their birds staunchly. It gave my dogs a well earned day off, and I'm sure they took advantage of it, lounging around my house and making sure the couch doesn't get stolen while I'm in the woods.

A Day Off
A rare day off from the northern New Hampshire grouse woods today, and after nine days in a row out there marching through the covers, it is much needed, for myself and all of the dogs. Any weight that they may have needed to shed prior to the season is long gone now, as Monty, Bode and Rosie all look trim and fit, geared up for the remainder of our guiding season over the next three weeks (I wish the same could be said for myself!).

Five Questions with Jerry Allen
I always enjoy reading the perspectives of other hunters on grouse, strategies on how to hunt them, the dogs that help us hunt them, and grouse hunting here in northern New England. I'm fortunate to know one such hunter that is a resident of northern New Hampshire that I've gotten to know a little bit. Jerry Allen (that's him on the right in the picture above) seems like he has lived several lives.

Winter Ramble
This morning was our first snowshoe excursion in to the grouse woods, sad to say. A combination of bitterly cold weather at times as well as icy conditions without much snow cover has delayed venturing forth in search of birds, not to mention the normal and not-so-normal work obligations (trade shows, computer melt downs, etc. - it's been a fun five weeks). But, this morning we have a few inches of new snow in the woods and the temps were pretty good.

VT Grouse Hunting Update: 11/5/2017
What a true microcosm of grouse and woodcock hunting the last three days in the uplands of Vermont! We had one of our best sessions of the season of grouse sighting and dog work on Friday, hunting in the rain and getting in to a boat load of grouse in the process. Not many woodcock, but I didn't expect many considering the area that we were in.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/14/2016
Oh what a difference a week makes! We worked hard to find grouse and woodcock, with some limited results, even in our traditional honey holes. While the results weren't terrible by any means, the bird sightings just were not happening nearly as frequently as they should be, but we had a few factors working against us.

Late Season Grouse Hunting
Amazing weather lately here in northern New Hampshire, and all over the northeast - very mild, and perfect for grouse hunting. While our winter snowmobiling enthusiasts are justifiably worried about the start of the season for riding Pittsburg's trails (officially open on 12/15), we have been able to get out there this week to chase birds and the long range forecast looks favorable for doing so for at least the next week.
