NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/19
The grouse woods are magical right now. The smells and the sights are intoxicating if you're a grouse hunter, and these are the days we're all thinking of in the heat of the summer or on a cold winter night. The leaves are coming down and the bird sightings are better than a couple of weeks ago, just not as frequent as we would like.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/11
Two more good days in the books, this time in the New Hampshire uplands, with my client Guy. Great temps for hunting, topping out in the low 50's, perfect weather for pointing dogs to work in and they've made the most of it in their time out there.

December Birds
Late season grouse hunting. It can be feast or, far more often, famine, for us late season grouse hunters. There are fewer birds at this time of the season, and those that we find seem to be well versed in the art of concealment and escape, but every now and then one goes up a little too close and becomes a much desired dinner guest. Bode admired this bird after first tracking it, and then retrieving it after it flushed beside me. A "reflex shot" later, it became another victim of the 28 gauge.

Heatwave
A rare image over the last few days of bird hunting: one of my clients with their hard-earned quarry, a beautiful male grouse. If my last post sounded dire in its description of how the hunting has been in the abnormally warm temperatures over the last week, it really took a turn for the worse over the weekend, as we had two of the warmest hunting days that we've experienced.

Yard Work
It's the time of the year where all good bird hunters should be working on the oft neglected commands that they likely will use during the hunting season. No rest for the weary, in other words, and it is hard to believe that the grouse and woodcock seasons open a mere four months from now. Sharpening up your dog's understanding of, and making possible corrections to, the commands that are very important for us bird hunters can be done now, instead of during that much anticipated hunt this autumn ...

Hope Springs Eternal
The northern New Hampshire winter snows have been rapidly melting over the last few weeks, allowing my pack and I to get out in the woods to work on wild birds again. In other words, the gravy train is over, and they have to get back to work ...

Season Review
It's that time of the grouse season again. Finally, a break for me and my spotted gang after a busy guiding schedule, meaning a much needed rest for the dogs, as well as a time for reflection on how this grouse season has gone. In short, it's been a good fall for finding grouse and woodcock, and my clients have connected on more birds (56 as of 11/20) this season than in any autumn we've had so far.

VT Grouse Hunting Update: 11/11
To say that we have been blessed with exceptional weather this November is an understatement. At a point in the season when it should be snowing, blowing and cold, it has been sunny with temperatures topping out in the 40's and 50's most days that we have been in the woods. Excellent weather for chasing ruffed grouse and watching bird dogs do what they do best!
