NH Grouse Hunting Update: 11/5
It has been a most enjoyable grouse hunting season this year, and we concluded our days hunting the gray ghost in New Hampshire with longtime friend and client Matt. We've chased birds together and fished for trout, stripers and false albacore quite a few years now, and it is thoroughly entertaining every time we get together. He has very specific opinions on bird dogs, cover, birds, and just about any other topic that I dare to bring up, so I was prepared for a couple of amusing hunts with Matt.

Stormy Weather ...
What a difference a week makes. Last Tuesday, it was nearly 75 degrees and we hunters and the dogs that we follow through the grouse woods were gassed by noon. Today, it was a balmy 45 degrees with a heavy mist coming down and a cool breeze blowing from the north. Our weather, and grouse hunting conditions, have literally changed in the matter of a few days, dramatically.

More Scouting & Training
Quite a few more sessions in the books for me and my pack over the last two weeks, and we've had mostly good results. We've been checking out some of our old haunts and finding grouse and woodcock most mornings, at least until the sun rises and conditions get too hot for the dogs.

Business As Usual
A simple grouse feather - it's what we'll be after in another month or so, or rather, piles of feathers. At this time of year, it's a reminder of what we're preparing for, and an indicator that perhaps we are indeed in an area where grouse habituate.

In Conclusion?
If this week marked the final excursions in to the grouse woods for me and my pack, it was a fitting conclusion to our season in the strangest fall ever. During the time of COVID, bird dogs, grouse and most importantly the woods themselves became even more of a refuge than normal, and the grouse woods were calling us back again for more exploration.

Snow Days
Old Man Winter has reared his ugly head again during our grouse season. It all started yesterday morning, as my client and I had to endure moderately falling and blowing snow as we first followed Bode, and then Chris's Weimaraner Monty, up and down a hillside in Vermont.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/28
Our weather pattern has gotten significantly colder this week, as what's been out west and in the midwest has begun to affect us a bit. It has also affected the upland bird hunting to some degree as well, as areas that were teeming with grouse just a few days ago were seemingly bereft of them yesterday. Why the change ... that is the great question.

NH / VT Upland Bird Hunting Update: 10/26
Fall is when I feel the most alive, and I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels this way. Don't get me wrong, there are parts of the other seasons that I like as well - the rebirth of the north woods in the springtime, casting dries to rising fish on a warm summer night, and even the stillness of winter can be appealing as well. For me, they all pale in comparison to fall - the grouse woods are strikingly beautiful, as their secrets are revealed as the leaves drop.
