Winter ruffed grouse hunting
Final Bird
That's my client Scott, and the final grouse taken of our season, with the aid of Rosie on Saturday. She had a particularly staunch point on this bird, and when it flushed close by from underneath a blowdown, it offered a great chance at a shot for Scott. He made it, and we had our final bird on the tote board for the year, and a nice reward for Rosie's efforts.

Easy Come, Easy Go ...
That was Millie, back on Monday of this week, relishing a woodcock taken over one of her points by my clients. She had several good points on woodcock in her session, and one on a grouse as well, but it seems as though our time with the "Little Russet Fellers" may be coming to an end.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/25
A very eventful last few days in the northern New Hampshire grouse and woodcock woods lately. We have had some decent weather, with some moisture and cool mornings for the dogs to run in, and the birds have been somewhat cooperative for the hunters. NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/17
That's Rosie ... on point again. She had quite a few of them this morning and afternoon, as she located a good number of woodcock and a couple of grouse as well. She hunted hard and under control today in the New Hampshire uplands and my client Peter managed to scratch down his first grouse and woodcock with her help.

Cooling Off
A refreshing change in the weather lately, as the warm weather we dealt with last week has given way to more seasonal temps this week - mid 50's today, and it started nicely this morning in the 40's. There was also a healthy breeze coming out of the southeast today, and we attempted to hunt the dogs in to that wind as much as possible.

Rosie and her pups
An Announcement
No, this is definitely not an April Fool's joke. Rosie had her litter of German Shorthaired Pointer puppies on Wednesday, March 29, and all are feeding and resting comfortably now. Ten pups were born to be exact - 7 females and 3 males. All are healthy, and will now take on the task of putting on weight over the next few weeks.

Broken shotgun
Broken
It's the end of the line for the grouse hunting season for my pack and I, but to reinforce the point, it's also the end for my 20 gauge shotgun. You can never tell if there's ice under that snow ...
