VT Upland Bird Hunting Update: 11/4
I'm not sure there are any explanations for how our last few days of upland bird hunting have been in New Hampshire and Vermont. Temps have been fluctuating, but the weather has mostly been pleasant for us to roam the hillsides in pursuit of grouse and woodcock. Yet, we have struggled at times to find birds and it has been frustrating to say the least.

Tricks & Treats
Some treats in the form of good numbers of grouse and woodcock for my hunters out in the grouse woods over the last couple of days, and an unwanted trick today, as the temp rose to an uncomfortable 70 degrees. In a season of strange turns in the weather from week to week, today's change was the most drastic. From a chilly 17 degree start on Monday morning, to our heatwave today, it was not the kind of weather we want when venturing forth to hunt.

Cold Snap
Those were some mighty big snowflakes coming down yesterday in New Hampshire's uplands. What started as merely a cold morning of grouse hunting became a moderate snow event in the afternoon. Thankfully, the blustery conditions only lasted a short time before the wind and snow settled down after a couple of hours.

NH Upland Bird Hunting Update: 10/26
That's my client's setter, "Dixie", during her run today in some supreme New Hampshire grouse and woodcock cover. The conditions were perfect for the scenting abilities of the dogs, as each dog had moments of glory (some more than others), and Scott's aim was true. He harvested a limit of grouse and two woodcock as well, and we had an awesome time watching some great dog work.

Firsts
Two days of ruffed grouse and woodcock hunting in New Hampshire, and two "firsts" for Rocky and Bella. Each scored their first point and successful grouse kill, thanks to my clients Jon and Steve. Both pups performed beautifully during their time out there, and we certainly have something to build on with them. They should be contributors to our guiding operation for years to come.

VT Upland Bird Hunting Update: 10/20
That's my client Ed yesterday morning, roaming the Vermont grouse woods in an attempt to keep up with Millie. She did a nice job for us yesterday, sticking a few solid woodcock points and a couple on grouse too. It was the most miles I've walked this season in a day (8.5) and while it started out on the cool side, the woods quickly warmed as we enter yet another heat wave the next few days.

NH Upland Bird Hunting Update: 10/17
Finally, a grouse making it in to the vest pouch, courtesy of my client Gil today. We had an eventful last two days in the grouse woods, with a lot of birds contacted, and consequently, a lot of shots fired. The action was hot and heavy, as we contacted approximately 60 birds in our time out there.

Blustery
That's Rocky from earlier this morning with a solid point on a grouse that held surprisingly well for him in the blustery conditions. A front came through last night, bringing a good amount of rain and strong winds out of the northwest all day today. It was the coldest day we've had so far, and it's hard to believe that just two weeks ago we were hunting in seventy degree weather.
