Ruffed grouse hunting in New Hampshire
Firsts
Two days of ruffed grouse and woodcock hunting in New Hampshire, and two "firsts" for Rocky and Bella. Each scored their first point and successful grouse kill, thanks to my clients Jon and Steve. Both pups performed beautifully during their time out there, and we certainly have something to build on with them. They should be contributors to our guiding operation for years to come.

Grouse hunting in New Hampshire
Ups and Downs
We've had spectacular conditions for grouse and woodcock hunting the last couple of days. Cool temps, with a bit of a breeze, have helped the dogs locate and hold point on quite a few of the birds that we've encountered lately. However, the quandary has been how one day of hunting can be so good and the next can be much tougher than we expected.

Woodcock hunting in Vermont
Vermont Opener
The first few days of the Vermont grouse and woodcock season is in the books, and it's been a good start for my pack and I. The dogs have all worked with plenty of controlled energy, and more importantly, each canine has been rewarded for its efforts, as Daniel and Joseph had some success for their first time each out in the grouse woods.

Two Weeks Away ...
So, we are now technically less than two weeks away from the grouse and woodcock hunting season opener in Vermont, and fifteen days from now will be the opener in New Hampshire. My pack is in crunch time for preparation for handling the cover and the birds, so we're getting out there as much as the hot temperatures allow.

Bode pointing a woodcock
Season Prediction
That's Bode yesterday morning, deep in some thick cover, on point. Thankfully, it was a woodcock that he was on, one that let me walk right past it, the way woodcock sometimes do. When I released him from his point, he sprinted right to where the bird would take off from, and hopefully that bird will be around for us to chase in a month or so.

The Woods Are Alive, With The Sound of ...
Imagine Julie Andrews singing those lines to the old Sound Of Music tune ... Yes, I have a strange sense of humor, but spring has me absolutely giddy lately, as the change of seasons has finally taken hold in northern Vermont and New Hampshire.

VT Grouse Hunting Update: 11/8/2018
While there have been many retrieves of wounded and crippled birds through the years by all of the dogs at one point or another, today's retrieve by Rosie ranks up there with the best that I've ever seen, not just because of the setting where it took place, but also the sheer determination shown by Rosie in doggedly hunting this bird down.

Early Returns
It was a beautiful weekend to look for grouse in some of our Vermont coverts, this first Saturday and Sunday of the season. The weather was as good as it gets for this early on - starting in the 30's and topping off in the 50's. It rained Friday night as well, resulting in plenty of moisture which did wonders for the scenting conditions.
