NH Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Update: 10/15/2018
Nearly perfect weather over the last four days for comfortable grouse and woodcock hunting, for hunters and dogs alike. With temps starting out in the upper 20's and 30's, and topping out in the 40's and 50's, we couldn't ask for better conditions to chase birds over hill and dale. That still hasn't made them easy however, as the changing weather has resulted in the drop of some of the leaf cover that was out there, and this usually makes the grouse a little uneasy.

The Bird Hunting Has Been "Hot"
First off, the grouse and woodcock hunting has been pretty good, let's say better than average, so far in 2018, but the hunting was also literally "hot" the last two days. Our hottest temperatures of the month in fact, and while it took its toll on us hunters and the dogs that actually do all of the work, it didn't seem to affect the bird hunting too much.

NH Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Update: 10/8/2018
So we're a full week in to the New Hampshire grouse and woodcock hunting season and those of you that follow our statistical tote board of flushes, contacts and kills have probably noticed that we while we have been harassing a good number of birds throughout this first week, we have very little to show for our efforts in the "grouse and woodcock taken" category.

Thick As A Brick
The dichotomy of early season grouse hunting has never been more apparent than the last couple of days. We have encountered more than our share of grouse and woodcock in northern New Hampshire's uplands, but it has been very difficult to get good glimpses of them, let alone get an accurate shot off. The dog work has been good for the most part - a few slip ups here and there from Monty, Bode and Rosie, but quite a few points on grouse and woodcock, with unfortunately nothing to show for their efforts.

Early Returns
It was a beautiful weekend to look for grouse in some of our Vermont coverts, this first Saturday and Sunday of the season. The weather was as good as it gets for this early on - starting in the 30's and topping off in the 50's. It rained Friday night as well, resulting in plenty of moisture which did wonders for the scenting conditions.

2018 Grouse Hunting Primer
We've got more work to do, but let's be serious ... instead of getting the dogs up to snuff for the woods, it's more about getting myself ready to follow eager bird dogs through the grouse woods. The shortcomings of getting older, but I still get excited for the coming season. Check it out, and get excited too.
