NH / VT Upland Bird Hunting Update: 10/26
Fall is when I feel the most alive, and I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels this way. Don't get me wrong, there are parts of the other seasons that I like as well - the rebirth of the north woods in the springtime, casting dries to rising fish on a warm summer night, and even the stillness of winter can be appealing as well. For me, they all pale in comparison to fall - the grouse woods are strikingly beautiful, as their secrets are revealed as the leaves drop.

Weather Rears Its Ugly Head
Good old unpredictable north country weather finally caught up with us over the last two days. Our first major weather system of the season rolled in over night on Thursday / Friday, resulting in a sizable deluge of rain yesterday. To make matters worse, the temperature dropped a few degrees last night, and we were greeted with a blanket of heavy, wet snow this morning.

Opening Week
The grouse season is underway here in northern New Hampshire, and it has been what we thought it would be, at least to this point. In short, there have been many more grouse contacts than woodcock, and though sporadic at times, the action has been steady most days.

September Scouting
The season is now less than a month away (actually, it's 24 days away, but who's counting?) and we are starting to hit the woods with a bit more regularity these days. We're trying to sharpen the dogs for the rigors that lie ahead, improve my own "grouse woods" conditioning, scout out new areas for this season, and just get back in the swing of things generally.

Final Session
The 2019 New Hampshire and Vermont grouse hunting seasons are nearly over now. Only one day left to pursue partridge, in the hopes of having one or two of them over as dinner guests. My pack and I have been out a few times in the past week, with mostly nothing to show for our efforts.

By the Numbers
Now there's some time to sit down and analyze the recently passed grouse guiding season. Frequent readers of the blog know that I keep a "tote board" of each grouse season (except the first season that I guided, in 2008), but this year I want to put some context with the numbers that we have collected over the last five weeks.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 11/6
Yes, the first snowfall of the season was actually today, which is late this year. Traditionally, we usually have our first snow around October 20, so we have been pretty lucky in the weather department this season. Lots of rain, but it has been well timed (at night, or on my "off" days), but the temperatures have mostly been mild. It was cold today however with the gusty wind, but the dogs still did a good job of finding birds and pointing them.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 11/1
It is on days like this where we question why exactly we grouse hunt. Cold temps, very windy conditions (30 - 40 MPH) and severely skittish ruffed grouse can lead one to wonder what we're doing out there, but every now and then we're successful, even under the harshest of conditions. That was the case today for my client Eric, as he harvested his first grouse ever and I'm sure that will keep him coming back for more, even when the odds are decidedly against us.
