Opening Week
As far as the disparity between grouse and woodcock during our days afield, it might just be that I prefer to hunt upland areas that are probably more "grouse friendly" considering the dry conditions that we had this summer and fall. Woodcock would probably find it difficult to exist in these areas, and perhaps they are at lower elevations that retain their moisture better.
The weather has been up and down too. From too warm on opening day, to a soaking rain the next day, and some good weather since then, it's been all over the place. Not always ideal scenting conditions, but certainly not the worst that I've seen over the years. Looks like there's some wet weather on the way this week, and then another cool down, which will be much welcomed.
We have still been encountering some family groups that are together, but also a lot of singles and pairs. One thing is for sure - when one bird flushes, be ready for another bird to thunder away as you wonder what happened with the first bird that you missed. Reload and stay ready ...
