The Glorious Twelfth
In a few days, it will be August 12. Just another day here in the United States, but an altogether different story in the British Isles. August 12, or "The Glorious Twelfth" as it has been known in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, is the start of the red grouse and ptarmigan shooting seasons, and they get fired up for it.

Five Questions with Jerry Allen
I always enjoy reading the perspectives of other hunters on grouse, strategies on how to hunt them, the dogs that help us hunt them, and grouse hunting here in northern New England. I'm fortunate to know one such hunter that is a resident of northern New Hampshire that I've gotten to know a little bit. Jerry Allen (that's him on the right in the picture above) seems like he has lived several lives.

July 20 Training Run
Our New Hampshire training sessions have continued the last two mornings, and while yesterday was in the mid-40's when we started, this morning was in the low-50's when we left the truck. Training Begins
That title is a bit misleading. After all, we've been doing our yard work for the last two months, reinforcing the "whoa" and "come" commands regularly. This morning was the start of training in the grouse woods, in an attempt to simulate what the dogs will be facing in less than three months (can't believe another hunting season is almost at hand).

Winter Ramble
This morning was our first snowshoe excursion in to the grouse woods, sad to say. A combination of bitterly cold weather at times as well as icy conditions without much snow cover has delayed venturing forth in search of birds, not to mention the normal and not-so-normal work obligations (trade shows, computer melt downs, etc. - it's been a fun five weeks). But, this morning we have a few inches of new snow in the woods and the temps were pretty good.
