September 17 Grouse Scouting
Exactly two weeks until the grouse and woodcock hunting season opener in New Hampshire, and just eleven days until the grouse hunting season opens in the Green Mountain state. The season is nearly upon us, so we're in crunch time for our preparations.

German shorthaired pointer woodcock hunting in NH
September 5 Scouting
The weather has taken a turn towards fall lately in the north country, so running conditions for the dogs, particularly in the morning, have been all that we could ask for. It was really beautiful out there this morning, and with a slight breeze and plenty of moisture in the air, probably the remnants of a couple of rainy days that we've had this week, we had good scenting conditions for the canines.

Ruffed grouse feather
Scouting Continues
A ruffed grouse tail feather - a good find when you're out there wandering in the woods looking for them. There's a dichotomy though. Vermont bird hunting
Same Old, Same Old
Bode (above) and Rosie finally started their woods training today in Vermont, in search of grouse and woodcock to sharpen their skills on. It's Spring! Somewhere ...
Yes, somewhere (generally anywhere south of Franconia, NH) it is actually spring. Birds are chirping, geese are returning, and the usual assortment of dead roadside critters (raccoons and skunks mostly) are in abundance at the moment.

Grouse Hunting in the Winter
The grouse hunting season in northern New England, speaking specifically of New Hampshire and Vermont, is a short one. Yes, the rule book for both states may say that it stays open until December 31, but in most years the season lasts until the beginning of the firearm deer hunting seasons for all intents and purposes.

VT Grouse Hunting Update: 11/8/2018
While there have been many retrieves of wounded and crippled birds through the years by all of the dogs at one point or another, today's retrieve by Rosie ranks up there with the best that I've ever seen, not just because of the setting where it took place, but also the sheer determination shown by Rosie in doggedly hunting this bird down.
