NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/22
Two totally different days out in the grouse woods, with correspondingly different results. As is usually the case, weather is the x-factor in all forms of hunting and it also has a huge impact on our days grouse hunting. As a guide friend of mine says, "Some days you're the windshield, and some days you're the bug ...".

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/15
A tale of different days, with much different conditions for hunting grouse and woodcock in the uplands of New Hampshire. Yesterday was the day after a very busy holiday weekend, and though it started out on the chilly side, it had warmed considerably by noon and got down right hot in the afternoon.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/11
The beat goes on up here in northern New Hampshire with the grouse season. We've been moving plenty of birds the last couple of days (18 grouse and 12 woodcock Thursday morning, and 21 grouse and 5 woodcock on Friday), but the chances to actually take them have been, shall we say ... fleeting. Here today, gone tomorrow, especially with the grouse, or "gray ghosts", as I like to call them.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/4
This has been a familiar pose for Rosie this first week of the hunting season: on point. While she has had some solid grouse points this week, she has really excelled with her talents on woodcock. She has helped clients harvest five woodcock in the last few days, with some dynamic points, and it has been wonderful watching her be rewarded for her work.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/2
Two days in the books for the 2019 upland bird season, and it has been the typical early season story. We're encountering a good number of grouse and woodcock, but they are not giving us many chances at makable shots - especially the grouse. They have certainly lived up to their "gray ghost" moniker, as they seem to have an amazing knack of disappearing, even when they go up very close to us.

July 20 Training Run
Our New Hampshire training sessions have continued the last two mornings, and while yesterday was in the mid-40's when we started, this morning was in the low-50's when we left the truck. Nice temps at this time of year to get the dogs out, but the temperature rises quickly these days, so we were out of the woods by 10:30 or so both days.

Bird Dogs as a Conservation Tool
Most hunters reading this blog might already use bird dogs to help them in their pursuit of upland birds. Not only is using a dog esthetically pleasing (i.e. the classic bird dog scene, where a faithful canine companion is coursing back and forth, in search of game in front of you), but taking upland game birds with a dog that you have trained over several years is immensely rewarding.

What's Going On?
Yes, that is the question that people (Chris!) have been asking me lately about the bird populations of the north country. What can we expect to find in the woods on our voyages afield this autumn? In short, I'm still not sure.
