By the Numbers
Now there's some time to sit down and analyze the recently passed grouse guiding season. Frequent readers of the blog know that I keep a "tote board" of each grouse season (except the first season that I guided, in 2008), but this year I want to put some context with the numbers that we have collected during our five-week guiding season.

Final Week
I don't think I've ever seen such changes in weather, literally in a matter of a few days, for hunting grouse here in northern New Hampshire and Vermont. My last post detailed how we had just begun dealing with 4-5" of snow in the New Hampshire uplands, slogging it out through some pretty challenging spruce cover, but conditions would quickly change yet again.

Snow Days
Old Man Winter has reared his ugly head again during our grouse season. It all started yesterday morning, as my client and I had to endure moderately falling and blowing snow as we first followed Bode, and then Chris's Weimaraner Monty, up and down a hillside in Vermont.

Vermont Grouse Hunting Update: 10/31
That's Bode, with a hard earned Vermont ruffed grouse that we took today. Lots of miles, quite a few birds flushed, a couple of errant shots, and finally this one fell on the second shot from my 28 gauge. How has the hunting been in our limited explorations of some of our Vermont coverts?

Let's get to it ...

NH / VT Upland Bird Hunting Update: 10/26
Fall is when I feel the most alive, and I'm sure I'm not the only person that feels this way. Don't get me wrong, there are parts of the other seasons that I like as well - the rebirth of the north woods in the springtime, casting dries to rising fish on a warm summer night, and even the stillness of winter can be appealing as well. For me, they all pale in comparison to fall - the grouse woods are strikingly beautiful, as their secrets are revealed as the leaves drop.

Predictions
Making predictions isn't generally my thing. I'm bound to be wrong, eating my words just a couple of weeks in to the season. This can be for a number of factors. Perhaps I just wasn't right about what I thought the grouse and woodcock hunting seasons would be, or a sudden change in the weather makes conditions more favorable (or worse) than what was originally thought. That's why I don't like to make predictions when it comes to the season for hunting ruffed grouse and woodcock.

September Scouting
The season is now less than a month away (actually, it's 24 days away, but who's counting?) and we are starting to hit the woods with a bit more regularity these days. We're trying to sharpen the dogs for the rigors that lie ahead, improve my own "grouse woods" conditioning, scout out new areas for this season, and just get back in the swing of things generally.

2019 Grouse hunting Highlights
It's feeling more and more like autumn in northern New Hampshire lately - 56 degrees today as I write this, and a much needed change in the weather and, thankfully, no more humidity. While summers tend to be short and sweet up here, fall can be even shorter at times, and becomes a more treasured part of our memory banks on those especially beautiful days.
