Ruffed grouse hunting in New Hampshire
NH Grouse Hunting Update: 11/5
It has been a most enjoyable grouse hunting season this year, and we concluded our days hunting the gray ghost in New Hampshire with longtime friend and client Matt. We've chased birds together and fished for trout, stripers and false albacore quite a few years now, and it is thoroughly entertaining every time we get together. He has very specific opinions on bird dogs, cover, birds, and just about any other topic that I dare to bring up, so I was prepared for a couple of amusing hunts with Matt.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 11/3
Every day is different in grouse hunting. Changing weather, changing cover conditions, and most of all the behavior of the birds themselves often dictates how the day will go for us hunters. There have been some changes through our hunts this week, as we watched the dogs of some clients work, as well as Rosie, Bode and Monty.

NH / VT Upland Bird Hunting Update: 10/27
Every day is different in grouse hunting, and that's one of the reasons why I enjoy it so much. Changing conditions, changing weather, the work of the dogs, and the birds themselves form the mosaic of what a day out in the grouse woods will be. Some days we can do no wrong, and finding where the birds are almost seems easy, and other days it is truly like finding a needle in a haystack.

Two Days
Charles Dickens couldn't have written it any better: "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ...". Much like his opening of A Tale Of Two Cities, we just had two days of grouse and woodcock hunting that exemplify that oft quoted line. The weather couldn't have been any more different from Tuesday to Wednesday, and the hunting was the best of the season so far. Nevertheless, each day had its challenges for my clients and I.

Stormy Weather ...
What a difference a week makes. Last Tuesday, it was nearly 75 degrees and we hunters and the dogs that we follow through the grouse woods were gassed by noon. Today, it was a balmy 45 degrees with a heavy mist coming down and a cool breeze blowing from the north. Our weather, and grouse hunting conditions, have literally changed in the matter of a few days, dramatically.

NH Upland Bird Hunting Update: 10/12
The 2021 grouse and woodcock hunting season is moving along here in northern New Hampshire, and while there have been a few subtle changes in the conditions occurring in the woods over the last week, we are still in what I would term the "first" stage of the grouse hunting season.

Peak of the Season (so far)
We're a week in to the season now, and while the trees have not been cooperating for us grouse hunters in dropping their leaves, even we can appreciate the beauty surrounding us out there right now. The last two days, Monday in New Hampshire and yesterday in Vermont, were absolutely brilliant with a kaleidoscope of colors, and we have reveled in the fantastic scenery we've been walking in.

Leaves!
There are many factors that may make the difference between successful grouse hunts and those ventures that turn out to be particularly frustrating. Early on in the grouse season, warm temperatures and abundant leaf cover are often the greatest hindrances for dogs and hunters.
