NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/2
Two days in the books for the 2019 upland bird season, and it has been the typical early season story. We're encountering a good number of grouse and woodcock, but they are not giving us many chances at makable shots - especially the grouse. They have certainly lived up to their "gray ghost" moniker, as they seem to have an amazing knack of disappearing, even when they go up very close to us.

September 17 Grouse Scouting
Exactly two weeks until the grouse and woodcock hunting season opener in New Hampshire, and just eleven days until the grouse hunting season opens in the Green Mountain state. The season is nearly upon us, so we're in crunch time for our preparations.

Grouse Hunting in the Winter
The grouse hunting season in northern New England, speaking specifically of New Hampshire and Vermont, is a short one. Yes, the rule book for both states may say that it stays open until December 31, but in most years the season lasts until the beginning of the firearm deer hunting seasons for all intents and purposes.

VT Grouse Hunting Update: 11/8/2018
While there have been many retrieves of wounded and crippled birds through the years by all of the dogs at one point or another, today's retrieve by Rosie ranks up there with the best that I've ever seen, not just because of the setting where it took place, but also the sheer determination shown by Rosie in doggedly hunting this bird down.

VT Grouse Hunting Update: 11/4/2018
It is unusual for me to post two consecutive days on the Partridge Blog, but Sunday's conditions were so different from Saturday that an update is warranted. The fast moving and chilly front that drove us from the grouse woods the day before left the Vermont highlands with a coating of several inches of snow overnight, immersing our hunting areas back in to winter, at least temporarily.

VT Grouse Hunting Update: 11/3/2018
The approaching muzzleloader season for deer in New Hampshire has meant a shift to our grouse covers in northern Vermont, and the hunting has been pretty good the last two days, although they were rain shortened sessions each day. The good news is that the areas that we were hunting were huge, which allowed us to put in some long half days of hunting - four hours or more in each spot.

NH Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Update: 10/29/2018
The beat goes on up here in northern New Hampshire's grouse woods. The hunting has had its moments over the last few days, but this has been the most challenging period of the season so far, mostly due to our wintry weather conditions. It was unseasonably cold last week, with high temps in the 30's most days, and very brisk winds to boot. While the conditions didn't seem to bother the dogs too much, it made it difficult on us hunters.

NH Grouse & Woodcock Hunting Update: 10/24/2018
We are definitely now in the "second phase" of the grouse hunting season. Gone are the leaves that hid the grouse and woodcock so completely just two weeks ago and now the cover has opened up to a great extent. We're getting some good looks and semi-clean shots at fast escaping grouse and woodcock, but they are the survivors of the first few weeks, and tend not to linger too long when approached too closely by hunters or dogs.
