That's a Wrap!
Bittersweet.

Another grouse season in the books for me and my spotted gang, and one inevitably wonders how many more there might be ahead. Thankfully, the legs are still there, and the back and heart most days, but this grouse hunting is really a young man's game, and I am the ripe old age of 51 ...

In Conclusion?
If this week marked the final excursions in to the grouse woods for me and my pack, it was a fitting conclusion to our season in the strangest fall ever. During the time of COVID, bird dogs, grouse and most importantly the woods themselves became even more of a refuge than normal, and the grouse woods were calling us back again for more exploration.

By the Numbers
Now there's some time to sit down and analyze the recently passed grouse guiding season. Frequent readers of the blog know that I keep a "tote board" of each grouse season (except the first season that I guided, in 2008), but this year I want to put some context with the numbers that we have collected during our five-week guiding season.

Final Week
I don't think I've ever seen such changes in weather, literally in a matter of a few days, for hunting grouse here in northern New Hampshire and Vermont. Final Session
The 2019 New Hampshire and Vermont grouse hunting seasons are nearly over now. Only one day left to pursue partridge, in the hopes of having one or two of them over as dinner guests. My pack and I have been out a few times in the past week, with mostly nothing to show for our efforts.

NH Grouse Hunting Update: 10/20
A few more days gone in the 2019 grouse and woodcock hunting season, and conditions are changing fast as we enter the "middle" part of the three phases, as I like to call it. We lost a lot of our leaves last week when the "Bomb Cyclone" came through - it really wasn't that bad up here, but the gusty winds helped dispose of another of our excuses for missing grouse - the abundant foliage.

September 17 Grouse Scouting
Exactly two weeks until the grouse and woodcock hunting season opener in New Hampshire, and just eleven days until the grouse hunting season opens in the Green Mountain state. The season is nearly upon us, so we're in crunch time for our preparations.
